A U.S. official told Al Jazeera that the USS Theodore Roosevelt and its strike group have left San Diego for the region. The carrier departed California on Sept. 27 and is expected to move into U.S. Central Command’s area of operations.
The official said Washington expects to have three aircraft carriers and two amphibious groups positioned around Iran by the end of November.
Theodore Roosevelt is expected to eventually relieve the USS George Washington, which has been operating in the Middle East since August.
