U.S. removes Syria from blanket arms-export denial list; future weapons requests will now be reviewed case by case
Middle EastU.S.
The State Department removed Syria from the countries subject to an automatic policy of denial for defense exports and related approvals, with the change taking effect on October 1.
The move does not authorize any specific weapons sale.
Instead, future requests involving defense articles and services can now be considered individually under the U.S. licensing process.
The policy shift followed Washington’s August 24 decision to rescind Syria’s designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism.
