Somalia’s president says Israel plans a naval base in Berbera and use of its airport, linking the move to wider regional ambitions

Eastora News·

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud told Al Jazeera that Somalia would “under no circumstances” accept an Israeli presence on its territory.

He said Israel plans to establish a naval base in Berbera and use the city’s airport in Somaliland, arguing that the aim is to gain closer access to Gulf countries and Iran.

Mohamud linked the plans to what he called the “Greater Israel” project and said Israel’s involvement would destabilize the region.

He added that efforts to bring Middle East conflicts into Somalia “will not succeed.”
