Denmark investigating major data breach exposing personal information of 8.8 million people
Danish authorities are investigating a major security breach involving the country’s Central Person Register, or CPR, after unauthorized users accessed personal data belonging to around 8.8 million people.
The exposed information includes names, addresses and CPR identification numbers, including records belonging to people who have died or moved abroad.
The CPR system contains records on roughly 11 million people in total, far more than Denmark’s current population because it also includes former residents and deceased individuals.
Authorities said the breach occurred after attackers misused a private Danish company’s legitimate access to the registry.
The company’s access has since been cut off, and police and data-protection authorities are investigating the incident.
