FBI arrests California realtor at LAX over alleged surveillance of Taiwan president’s son for China
Federal agents arrested Wanying “Heather” Zhang, 34, at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday before she boarded a flight to Shanghai.
Zhang, a California realtor, is accused of acting as an unregistered agent of the Chinese government and surveilling Ting-Yu Lai, the son of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te.
According to a federal criminal complaint, Zhang and an accomplice traveled to the Seattle area in September 2025 and allegedly photographed Lai’s son, his wife and their child near their home.
Investigators say Zhang later reported details of the surveillance to contacts linked to the Chinese government.
She now faces a federal charge of acting as an unregistered foreign agent.
