Former German intelligence chief August Hanning arrested on suspicion of espionage and attempted treason
German authorities have arrested August Hanning, the former head of the BND foreign intelligence service, on suspicion of espionage, obtaining state secrets and attempted treason.
His former aide Manfred D. was also arrested on suspicion of assisting the alleged offenses.
Prosecutors allege that Manfred D. supplied Hanning with around 2,000 classified BND documents over several years in exchange for money.
Investigators say Hanning used some of the material in his private consulting work and, in at least one case, prepared an analysis for a foreign intelligence officer.
Authorities are searching properties linked to both men as the investigation continues.
