Ordinary seafarers are also receiving four to six times their usual pay as “danger money,” according to the Financial Times. Captains normally earn about $15,000 a month in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Oman, while some ordinary crew earn around $1,500.
One industry source told the FT that some seafarers are now “almost being treated like mercenaries” because of the risks involved in crossing the Strait of Hormuz.
