Trump says Putin agreed to release nearly 5 million tons of Russian diesel to U.S. and global markets to drive down fuel prices
President Donald Trump said Friday that Vladimir Putin agreed during a “highly successful” discussion to release nearly 5 million tons of Russian diesel to U.S. and global markets. Trump said more than 300,000 tons would be supplied immediately, followed by 500,000 tons in November and another 1 million tons shortly afterward.
Trump said Russia could then provide an additional 3 million tons depending on the condition of its refineries, predicting the extra supply would bring diesel prices down “fast” and provide relief for American farmers, ranchers and truckers.
The agreement marks a shift in U.S. policy toward Russian energy as Washington seeks to ease a surge in diesel prices driven by disruptions to global fuel supplies. The U.S. banned imports of Russian oil and petroleum products in 2022, but the Treasury Department has issued a temporary authorization allowing the new diesel supplies.
