India detains hundreds ahead of Delhi protest demanding election chief’s resignation over alleged voter-list fraud
Indian police detained hundreds of demonstrators in New Delhi on Saturday ahead of a protest called by the Cockroach Janta Party to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged voter-list fraud. Party founder Abhijeet Dipke was among those taken into custody, and police deployed thousands of personnel in the area before the planned demonstration.
Dipke and other party leaders were detained after arriving in Delhi from Mumbai, according to reports. The protest was organized by the Cockroach Janta Party.
The demonstration is part of wider protests in India over a voter-roll revision. Opposition groups and campaigners have raised concerns about alleged irregularities and the removal of voters from electoral lists.
