Pentagon raises official Iran operations toll to 21 dead and 865 wounded after Hegseth called Washington Post report a “complete lie”; separate Iraq death lifts regional total to 22
The Pentagon has updated its official count of U.S. troops who have died in operations against Iran to 21, with 865 wounded. The revised tally includes two previously unreported noncombat deaths, according to The Washington Post, which had reported last month that the Pentagon’s public figures were incomplete.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed the Post’s earlier report as “a complete lie.” A separate soldier’s death in a training accident in Iraq, which the military said was not connected to operations against Iran, brings the number of U.S. troops who have died in the Middle East since February 28 to 22.
The Pentagon told the Post it was revising how its casualty database reports deaths and injuries, including adding a “pending adjudication” category, while reiterating its commitment to accurate accounting.
The Washington Post reported that the Pentagon changed its public casualty categories after the administration said Operation Epic Fury had ended, although U.S.-Iran exchanges of fire continued. The Pentagon then placed some casualties in a separate overseas-operations category.
