At least 109 people, including 15 children, died when a boat carrying about 350 migrants from Djibouti to Yemen capsized near Guhere, north of Obock, during the night of October 8–9, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said. More than 116 people remain missing, and search-and-rescue operations are continuing.
More than 80 people survived, all Ethiopian nationals. The route is used by tens of thousands of migrants from the Horn of Africa seeking work and better living conditions in Gulf countries, despite the dangers of the crossing and continuing violence in Yemen.
