Pope Leo XIV calls death penalty “inadmissible,” saying detention can protect the public while preserving offenders’ chance of redemption

Pope Leo XIV reiterated the Catholic Church’s opposition to capital punishment in a statement published on Saturday, October 10, saying it violates the inviolability and dignity of the person.
He said the common good can be protected and justice served without executions. Effective detention systems, he added, can safeguard citizens without completely removing the possibility of redemption for people convicted of crimes.
Leo made the statement on the World Day Against the Death Penalty. It came as the United States announced plans to livestream an execution by firing squad, according to the Associated Press.
