“You’ll find out”: Trump leaves U.S. intervention against Houthis open after Riyadh airport attack kills 12, and says he will speak with Saudi crown prince
President Donald Trump said the United States could join Saudi military action against Yemen’s Houthis after a strike on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport killed 12 people and injured 309. Asked whether Washington would enter the conflict, he replied, “Well, you’ll find out,” and said he planned to speak with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Trump called the attack “horrendous” and said, “What happened in Saudi Arabia is not acceptable.” He described the Saudis as “good fighters,” said Washington had contacts with the Houthis and added, “We’ll see what happens.” Asked whether the attack could change his pledge not to strike Iran before the U.S. midterm elections, he replied, “We’ll look at that.”
The Houthis have claimed responsibility for earlier attacks on the airport this week, but had not claimed Saturday’s strike, according to reporting by The Associated Press. The airport attack caused civilian casualties and disrupted flights; U.S. officials blamed the Houthis, while Saudi authorities reported the death toll and injuries.
In separate remarks, Trump renewed his criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying Zelensky could have reached an agreement with Russia “many times” and should hold an election. Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin “would very much like to make a deal” and argued that Zelensky could have secured better terms two years ago.
The latest attack came amid a sharp escalation in fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces in Yemen. A 2022 ceasefire had largely held until the recent resurgence in hostilities, according to The Associated Press.
