Iranian envoy rejects UK’s RAF Fairford allegation and offers cooperation as Burnham says suspected plot was almost certainly directed by the IRGC
Iran’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Seyed Ali Mousavi, again denied Tehran’s involvement in the September incident near RAF Fairford, telling British minister Stephen Doughty that Iran was ready to cooperate with the investigation. The state news agency IRNA reported that Mousavi urged Britain not to take a position without evidence and said Iran had no role in the case.
The meeting came as Prime Minister Andy Burnham told Parliament the suspected plot was “almost certainly” directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and was highly likely to have been coordinated in Iran. The UK government also announced sanctions against two Iranian men.
Five people were initially arrested on suspicion of terror offences after the incident at the Gloucestershire airbase, which prompted a major counter-terrorism investigation. AP reported on Monday that seven men had since been arrested in the inquiry; all had been released on bail, and no one had been charged.
RAF Fairford is used by the U.S. Air Force. The base has also been used by American bombers in strikes against Iran, according to AP.
