Axios: Hegseth and CENTCOM leadership are strongest backers of renewed U.S. strikes on Iran
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and the leadership of U.S. Central Command are the strongest supporters of resuming strikes on Iran, Axios reported Tuesday, citing a source familiar with internal discussions.
The report said most of President Donald Trump's other advisers currently favor continuing economic sanctions and other forms of pressure rather than restarting major combat operations.
Trump has been weighing whether to resume military action against Iran after initially appearing more inclined toward new strikes before becoming more hesitant, according to Axios.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also discussed the possibility of renewed operations against Iran with Trump, including potential strikes on Iranian military and nuclear targets.
Trump said Tuesday that the United States would make a decision on Iran "very soon," while the White House has said Washington will not attack Iran before the November 3 U.S. midterm elections.
