Egypt offers Saudi Arabia support “without reservation” amid Houthi attacks, but Abdelatty announces no specific military commitment
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said Cairo would provide Saudi Arabia with any support it requests as the kingdom faces renewed Houthi attacks. In a Bloomberg TV interview on Tuesday, he said: “Whatever is being asked by the Saudis, of course we will respond,” adding that Egypt was providing “all kinds of support” without reservation.
Abdelatty also called for an immediate halt to Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and expressed Egypt’s solidarity with the kingdom. He was asked about the possibility of Egyptian military support, but did not announce a specific deployment or other military commitment.
Houthi attacks have recently struck Saudi airports, including a deadly attack on Riyadh’s airport, as the conflict spreads further into the kingdom. Disruption to Red Sea shipping has also hurt Suez Canal revenues, adding an economic stake for Egypt in maritime security around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Egypt has a history of caution over military involvement in Yemen. Under President Gamal Abdel Nasser, Egypt intervened in the North Yemen civil war from 1962 to 1967, at one point deploying about 70,000 troops; the costly campaign became known as Egypt’s “Vietnam.”
