Hijab-wearing girls are turned away from Azerbaijani schools as revised uniform rules bar clothing deemed inconsistent with secular education
World
Girls wearing hijabs have reportedly been prevented from attending classes in Azerbaijan, with images showing some crying outside schools and others sitting on steps with their heads in their hands.
The Cabinet of Ministers amended school uniform rules on September 21, barring clothing that conflicts with the “principle of secularism” in general education.
The amendment does not explicitly name the hijab. Al Jazeera reported that some schools have prevented students and teachers from attending classes under the revised rules.
