Israel calls the Netherlands an “antisemitism hotspot” after Alkmaar keeps Hapoel Be’er Sheva fans out of its October 15 match
Israel’s Foreign Ministry condemned the Netherlands after Alkmaar authorities upheld a ban on Hapoel Be’er Sheva supporters attending the Israeli club’s October 15 Europa League match against AZ Alkmaar. The ministry described the Netherlands as an “antisemitism hotspot” despite Israeli diplomatic efforts to reverse the decision.
The ministry said the ban “rewards those who threaten and incite violence” and accused Dutch authorities of banning “the victims, not the attackers.” It also blamed anti-Israel rhetoric by Dutch politicians and public figures for fueling antisemitic attacks in the country.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar raised the issue with Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen, and Israeli officials contacted the Dutch Foreign Ministry and Alkmaar municipality, pressing for supporters to be admitted and their safety guaranteed. Alkmaar authorities cited public-order concerns, including the risk of protests and possible clashes, in barring away fans.
Alkmaar’s risk assessment took into account violence surrounding the November 2024 Ajax–Maccabi Tel Aviv match in Amsterdam. The October 15 fixture is set to proceed in Alkmaar without Hapoel Be’er Sheva supporters.
