MI5 chief says Iran is shifting toward British military targets and calls suspected RAF Fairford plot “not unique” as the investigation continues
MI5 Director General Ken McCallum said Iran’s ambitions in Britain have shifted toward “harder targets, like military sites,” and described the suspected plot near RAF Fairford as “not unique.” He said he could not discuss the case because it remains under investigation, Arab News reported.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Monday that the suspected plot was “almost certainly” directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Iran has denied involvement, and authorities have not publicly detailed evidence establishing a link to Tehran.
Police said petrol was found in three vans near the base on September 27, but no explosives. Seven men have been arrested in the investigation and released on bail; no one has been charged. The United States withdrew its bombers from RAF Fairford after the incident.
RAF Fairford has been used by U.S. bombers during strikes on Iran in the ongoing war. McCallum said the suspected incident was not unique, citing other examples in Britain and elsewhere, but did not identify them.
