U.S. military archbishop tells Catholic soldiers to seek exemption from Hasan firing squad duty and condemns plan to livestream the execution
U.S.
Archbishop Timothy Broglio, who oversees Catholic pastoral services in the U.S. military, urged Catholic soldiers assigned to the firing squad for Nidal Hasan’s planned execution to ask to be excused, saying the duty would conflict with Church teaching. He also condemned the proposal to livestream the execution.
If carried out as scheduled, Hasan’s execution would be the U.S. military’s first since 1961 and its first use of a firing squad since 1945, according to CBS News.
