“Weaponizing federal law enforcement”: Democrats condemn search of Ilhan Omar’s Washington home less than a month before November midterm elections
Democratic lawmakers condemned the October 12 search of Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington home, arguing that the operation’s timing—less than a month before the November 3 midterm elections—raised concerns about the use of federal agencies against political opponents.
Homeland Security Investigations agents carried out the search under a warrant authorized by a court, the Justice Department said, describing it as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. The department did not publicly provide further details.
Congressional Democrats described the search as politically motivated and accused the Trump administration of weaponizing federal law enforcement. Omar has also called the operation an attempt to target political enemies.
News reports said the investigation concerns Omar’s immigration paperwork from childhood, completed by her late father. The Justice Department has not publicly confirmed those details.
