The Independent Football Regulator has warned that English football faces major financial risks, leaving club finances dangerously exposed. Its State of the Game report says 94% of clubs across England’s top five leagues recorded losses in the 2025-26 period.
The report also says more than 60% of clubs in the English Football League and National League are technically insolvent, amid rising debts and continued reliance on club owners.
