NCIS investigates death of USS Michigan sailor found unresponsive after crash at Naval Base Kitsap
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the death of a sailor assigned to the guided-missile submarine USS Michigan after the sailor was found unresponsive following a single-vehicle crash at Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton in Washington state.
Lt. Zachary Anderson, a spokesperson for Submarine Group 9, told USNI News that the sailor was found at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday after the crash.
The sailor’s name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The Kitsap County Coroner’s Office said it will conduct an autopsy. The cause and manner of death have not yet been determined.
NCIS said the investigation is standard procedure for non-combat, medically unattended deaths involving Department of the Navy service members and declined to provide further details while the inquiry remains active.
