Passenger train derails in Pakistan’s Punjab province, killing five and injuring at least 30
At least five people were killed and 30 others injured when a passenger train derailed in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province, police said.
The derailment occurred early Tuesday near Multan. Rescue teams pulled passengers from the damaged carriages and transported the injured to hospitals.
The train was traveling from Karachi to Peshawar when 14 carriages derailed near Sher Shah, according to local authorities.
The cause of the derailment was not immediately clear, and authorities said an investigation had been launched.
Pakistan has a history of deadly railway accidents, with aging infrastructure, signaling problems and maintenance shortcomings frequently cited as contributing factors.
