Ukraine accuses US of aiding Russia over missed missile warnings and Starlink slowdown as strikes kill six and cut power to more than 600,000
Ukraine accused the United States on Wednesday of helping Russia, saying Washington failed to warn it about incoming missile strikes and slowed Starlink, which Ukrainian forces rely on for battlefield communications and frontline logistics.
Ballistic missiles struck Kyiv for two consecutive nights before air raid sirens could sound in time, hitting energy facilities and cutting power to more than 600,000 people. The attacks came despite US President Donald Trump’s surprise announcement of an energy ceasefire in the nearly five-year conflict. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had shown the United States “such ostentatious disrespect” and that Moscow did not consider the American president’s statements strong.
Authorities reported that six people were killed and dozens wounded in Kyiv on Wednesday. Significant damage knocked out power across parts of the city. Power plants in the eastern Kharkiv region also came under ballistic-missile attack, affecting electricity and heating infrastructure.
On Tuesday night, Zelensky called the lack of notice from Western partners about imminent Russian ballistic-missile launches “completely unjust.” Sergiy Beskrestnov, identified as a senior Ukrainian official and presidential adviser, linked the attacks to reports of slower speeds on Starlink terminals. He said partners were depriving Ukraine of a key opportunity to defend against jet-powered drones. Ukrainian defense sources separately said SpaceX had unilaterally restricted the operation of Starshield terminals without prior warning.
The Kremlin said it was closely monitoring any potential changes in Washington’s support for Ukraine. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters it was too early to draw systemic conclusions. NATO chief Mark Rutte urged alliance members to increase support for Ukraine’s air defenses, while Zelensky said Ukraine was prepared to refrain from striking Russian energy infrastructure and accused the Kremlin of squandering the opportunity for de-escalation.
