US Forces Korea commander says North Korea is gaining long-distance deployment and logistics experience in Russia’s war, which may complicate deterrence

Eastora News·

Gen. Xavier Brunson, commander of US Forces Korea, said North Korea’s support for Moscow in the war against Ukraine is building its military capabilities. He made the remarks during a discussion at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, Yonhap News Agency reported.

Brunson said North Korean forces have learned how to move troops, weapons and equipment from their country into Russia. Their experience extends beyond battlefield tactics to establishing supply chains, transporting personnel and equipment over long distances, and mobilizing military resources.

He warned that Pyongyang’s ability to apply wartime experience to its military operations could complicate deterrence efforts by Washington and Seoul. Brunson also said Russia had provided North Korea with military equipment, including electronic warfare jammers, in exchange for its support.

On the proposed transfer of wartime operational control from the United States to South Korea, Brunson reiterated his support for a conditions-based transition and cautioned against proceeding before critical military requirements are met.

Moscow and Pyongyang significantly strengthened their military partnership after their leaders signed a mutual defence treaty in June 2024.
