Latvia's Kulbergs says supporting Ukraine costs Europeans "one beer less a year"
Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs said Thursday that continued financial support for Ukraine was affordable for Europeans, comparing the cost to giving up one beer per person each year.
"It is one beer less for one European a year. We can afford that. But Ukraine needs it now," Kulbergs said as EU leaders met in Brussels.
He added that Europeans should be willing to accept a small reduction in personal comfort if it helps Ukraine endure the war. "If we drink less, their lives are saved. Simple as that," he said.
Kulbergs argued that a strong Ukraine also strengthens Europe and warned that weakening support during a crucial winter would create broader security problems for the continent.
His remarks came as EU leaders discussed Ukraine's funding needs for 2027 alongside disputes over energy prices, defense spending and the bloc's next long-term budget.
