Trump cancels plan to livestream Fort Hood shooter's execution, says Hasan will still die by firing squad
President Donald Trump said Thursday that the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, the former U.S. Army major convicted in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, will not be livestreamed.
"He will die, as scheduled, by firing squad, but this event will not be streamed," Trump said, reversing a plan announced last week by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Trump said he had considered the broadcast a possible deterrent but acknowledged that many Americans did not want to watch an execution. Immediate family members of the victims will still be allowed to witness it in person if they choose.
Hasan is scheduled to be executed on December 3 for killing 13 people and wounding 32 others at Fort Hood in Texas.
The livestream plan had drawn bipartisan criticism as well as objections from religious leaders and some victims' families. Trump had said earlier that he would review the proposal before making a final decision.
