U.S. President Donald Trump’s approval falls to record-low 33% two weeks before midterms, ABC/Post/Ipsos poll finds
U.S. President Donald Trump’s job approval has fallen to 33%, the lowest level recorded for him in either of his presidential terms by the ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos polling series, according to a survey released Sunday, October 18.
The poll, conducted October 9-13 among 2,545 U.S. adults, found 66% disapprove of Trump’s performance, including 52% who strongly disapprove. Among independents, his approval fell to 22%, also a record low in the polling series.
The results come just over two weeks before the November 3 midterm elections, with Democrats holding an eight-point advantage among likely voters in congressional races: 52% said they would support the Democratic candidate in their district, compared with 44% for the Republican.
Democrats also held a 21-point advantage among independent likely voters, 56% to 35%. Democratic voters showed higher participation indicators as well: 72% said they were certain to vote, compared with 65% of Republicans, while Democrats were also more likely to say they were closely following the election.
Economic dissatisfaction remains a major factor. Three-quarters of Americans rated the economy negatively, 48% said they were financially worse off than when Trump returned to office, and 72% said the country was headed in the wrong direction.
Trump received his lowest issue rating on the cost of living, with 21% approving and 77% disapproving of his handling of it. On inflation, 23% approved and 75% disapproved.
The survey used Ipsos’ probability-based KnowledgePanel and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points for all adults and 2.2 points among registered and likely voters.
