Türkiye welcomes Libyan parliament’s backing for 2019 maritime accord, a reversal by the eastern-based legislature
Türkiye has welcomed a decision by Libya’s House of Representatives concerning the 2019 memorandum of understanding on the delimitation of maritime jurisdiction areas. In a statement, Türkiye’s foreign ministry said the agreement is based on international law and equity, protects the mutual rights and interests of both countries, and strengthens bilateral cooperation.
The parliamentary backing marks a substantial reversal for the eastern-based legislature, which had long opposed the accord and questioned whether the Tripoli-based government had authority to conclude it without parliamentary approval. That opposition had been a major point of contention over domestic political endorsement of the agreement.
Türkiye said it would continue working with all partners to promote trust, stability and peace in the Mediterranean basin in line with international law.
Libya has experienced successive conflicts and rival administrations since the collapse of Muammar Gaddafi’s government in 2011.
