Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Friday that his delegation raised concerns about LGBTQ+ rights in meetings with Turkish officials a day earlier. Speaking at a press conference, he stressed that Canada’s participation in partnerships does not amount to endorsing another country’s policies.

“There are very few countries in this world that have the standards of Canada... so that all Canadians can live their lives as they choose,” Carney said. He added that engagement allows Canada to raise directly with senior authorities how it views the world and what its expectations are.
