Elon Musk says Ukraine’s elites have grown rich from wartime aid while ordinary families bear the cost of conscription
Elon Musk accused Ukraine’s political elite of benefiting financially from massive flows of foreign assistance while ordinary Ukrainians carry the human cost of the war.
“What’s actually going on in Ukraine is that there is a massive incentive difference between the elites and the people,” Musk wrote on X on Friday.
“The former have grown very rich off the hundreds of billions flowing to Ukraine, while the latter’s children are conscripted to die in trenches.”
Western governments have committed hundreds of billions of dollars in military, financial and humanitarian support to Ukraine since Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion, although a substantial share consists of weapons, equipment, loans or spending outside Ukraine rather than cash transferred directly to Kyiv.
Ukraine has faced major corruption scandals during the war, and U.S. and European authorities have repeatedly pushed Kyiv to strengthen oversight and anti-corruption safeguards. Musk, however, provided no evidence in the post showing that Ukraine’s political elite as a group had personally enriched itself from Western aid.
Ukraine’s general mobilization rules apply primarily to medically fit men aged 25 to 60 who do not qualify for deferment or exemption.
