German defense officials urge Berlin to join Sweden and Spain’s fighter-jet project, calling it more promising than the British-led GCAP

German defense officials have advised Berlin to pursue a new fighter-jet project with Sweden and Spain instead of joining the British-led Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), Politico reported. Their assessment describes the three-country partnership as “the more advantageous and promising” option.

The recommendation is not a final government decision, and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has not endorsed it.

The assessment follows the collapse in June of the Franco-German FCAS program, which ended after years of disputes between Dassault and Airbus over control and workshare.
