German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Friday that Iran and the Houthis must stop attacks on international shipping, infrastructure and neighboring countries, warning that disruptions to major sea routes were threatening the global economy and food security.

“Enough is enough,” Wadephul said in Istanbul, where Germany and Türkiye convened foreign ministers from European and regional powers to discuss maritime security and regional conflicts.

He accused Iran and the Houthis of holding global trade hostage through attacks affecting the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab, saying the consequences extended from instability in the Middle East to higher risks of hunger in vulnerable countries.

At the same time, Wadephul rejected further military escalation with Iran.

“Under no circumstances must a new escalation begin now. A military solution to this conflict is not possible,” he said, calling instead for Tehran to show “genuine willingness” to reach a sustainable diplomatic settlement, abandon maximalist demands and negotiate.

Wadephul also blamed Russia for worsening risks to food supplies in the Global South through attacks affecting Black Sea grain shipments. He said Germany wanted both Russian and Ukrainian grain to continue reaching international markets.

On Israel, Wadephul said international law clearly requires it to respect and protect Palestinian rights, adding that those obligations “must be consistently fulfilled.”
