Greece says it is enforcing Iran-related sanctions after the US targets a law firm operating in Greece and Panama and reports a subpoena in a Greek bank probe
Greece’s Finance Ministry said Thursday that the country is enforcing existing sanctions related to Iran and supporting efforts to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.
The statement followed a US Treasury Department announcement on Wednesday that it had sanctioned Karnakis & Karnakis, a law firm operating in Greece and Panama. The department accused the firm of providing legal services to Iranian shipping networks for years.
The Treasury Department also said the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network had issued an administrative subpoena as part of an investigation into an unnamed Greek bank. Greece’s Finance Ministry said it had taken note of the US announcement and that “all available information is being evaluated, and appropriate measures are being taken in accordance with established procedures and applicable national, EU, and international law.”
