Trump says he believes he has a ‘right to run again’ in 2028 because the 2020 election was ‘stolen’ from him

U.S. President Donald Trump said he believes he has a right to seek another term in 2028 because, he argued, the 2020 presidential election was taken from him, even as he acknowledged that the Constitution appears to bar him from running again.

Trump made the remarks Thursday night at a midterm campaign rally at Sioux Gateway Airport in Sioux City, Iowa.

“I don’t know who’s going to be your next president,” Trump said. “I’m not 100% sure, but I think the law says that I’m not allowed to run again.”

Referring to the 22nd Amendment, Trump added: “I’ve studied that phrase forever. Unfortunately, it’s quite concise. There’s not a lot of wiggle room.”

He then returned to his claim that he won the 2020 election. “They cheated us on the second one because we won it three times,” Trump said. “So I think I have the right to run again. I think I have the right to run again because they cheated.”

Trump won the presidential elections in 2016 and 2024. Joe Biden defeated him in 2020, and Trump’s claims that widespread fraud changed that result were not substantiated.

The 22nd Amendment states that no person may be elected president more than twice. Trump has repeatedly floated another run during his second term, while at other times acknowledging the constitutional restriction and saying he expects another Republican to succeed him.
