Qalibaf says U.S. is in a ‘quagmire’ of its own making over Iran war and says Washington must take steps to extricate itself
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammed Bagher Qalibaf said on Sunday that U.S. miscalculations over the war against Iran had left Washington in a “quagmire” and that it was up to the United States to take the steps needed to get out. He made the remarks during a parliamentary session, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency.
Qalibaf said Americans believed they could make Iran surrender through media pressure or military threats, but did not understand that today’s Iran was not the “humiliated Iran” of the Pahlavi era. He added that Iran would never allow a foreign power to dictate terms concerning the honor of the country.
Middle East tensions remain high following the U.S.-Israel war on Iran, which began in late February. The situation remains unsettled despite a ceasefire and a memorandum for a final peace deal, primarily because of continuing differences over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
