Serbia recorded its highest voter turnout in years in Sunday’s snap parliamentary election, which has been described as the biggest challenge yet to Aleksandar Vučić’s more than decade-long hold on power.

Election monitor Crta put turnout at 67.8% by 7 p.m., up from 55.5% at the same point in the 2023 election. Long queues were reported across Serbia and at polling stations abroad.

Analysts said high turnout favors the student-backed Student List. The list emerged from nearly two years of protests sparked by the deadly November 2024 canopy collapse at Novi Sad’s railway station.

Vučić said he would accept defeat. First results were expected later Sunday night.
