Brazil's Supreme Court has ordered police to seize the passport of defeated presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro as part of an investigation into his alleged connections to a money-laundering scheme involving more than $1 billion, The New York Times reports.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued the order after investigators found Bolsonaro had access to bank accounts belonging to a company owned by lawyer Willer Tomaz. Tomaz is accused of involvement in the alleged fraud operation.

Bolsonaro rejected the allegations and described the investigation as politically motivated following his election defeat. He said he would surrender his passport but had never considered leaving Brazil.
