Schiff accuses Trump’s Justice Department of trying to “subvert” Alaska Senate election after it sues over a namesake candidate
Sen. Adam Schiff accused the Justice Department of trying to “subvert” Alaska’s Senate election after it filed a federal lawsuit over a second candidate named Dan Sullivan appearing on the ballot.
Republicans allege Dan J. Sullivan, of Petersburg, entered the race solely to draw votes away from incumbent Sen. Dan S. Sullivan and benefit Democratic challenger Mary Peltola. The Justice Department’s filing cites the Petersburg candidate’s history of voting for Democrats in the last three presidential elections and his support for Peltola in her earlier congressional race, arguing that his candidacy was designed to confuse voters.
Schiff said the federal government has no standing to intervene in a dispute that Alaska courts have already resolved. An Alaska Superior Court judge and the state Supreme Court both allowed the namesake candidate to remain on the ballot.
He compared the Justice Department’s action to Trump’s efforts to challenge the 2020 election and called Attorney General Todd Blanche “all-in on this disgraceful campaign.”
