Trump administration taps JD Vance for Iran outreach to reassure Tehran hardliners and signal diplomacy to voters before midterms
The Trump administration selected Vice President JD Vance to lead renewed outreach to Iran, partly to reassure hardliners in Tehran and show U.S. voters that Washington is pursuing diplomacy ahead of next week’s midterm elections, sources told Al Arabiya.
Vance has opened a channel with Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and a former longtime commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Vance sent Rezaei a letter proposing a framework for renewed negotiations as Washington weighs whether diplomacy can prevent another major round of military action against Iran.
The choice was intended to make the initiative more credible to Iranian officials. Vance has previously argued against a prolonged conflict and advocated stronger diplomatic efforts alongside military pressure.
The outreach comes as the Iran war and higher fuel prices have weighed on Republican support ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
President Donald Trump gave a different account of Vance’s contact on Wednesday, saying it concerned medical supplies, not peace negotiations. Trump said he approved the contact but denied directing Vance to restart negotiations.
Other reports citing U.S. officials say the initiative is intended to determine whether Washington and Tehran can find enough common ground to prevent another short, intense U.S. military campaign in the coming weeks.
