Anti-government protests spread across Shia-majority areas of Bahrain for second night amid reports of clashes with security forces

Anti-government protests continued for a second consecutive night in several Shia-majority towns and villages in Bahrain, according to local opposition media and monitoring networks, amid reports of clashes with security forces.

Videos and local accounts circulated online showed protesters burning tyres and blocking roads in several areas, while security forces were reported to have used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse gatherings.

Independent verification of the scale of the protests, the locations involved and the reported police response remains limited. Bahraini authorities had not issued a detailed public statement on the latest demonstrations.

The unrest comes amid a broader security campaign that rights groups say has included arrests, summonses and prosecutions targeting Shia clerics, religious reciters, activists and other community figures during 2026.

The Bahrain Press Association said in a July report that it had documented at least 181 arrests and detentions linked to expression, publication or religious observance during the first half of the year, alongside hundreds of summonses and interrogations. Bahraini authorities have previously said security measures target violations of the law rather than religious affiliation.

Opposition-linked outlets have also reported renewed protests in recent weeks over political prisoners and restrictions on Shia religious activity.

The UK and other governments continue to warn that demonstrations in Bahrain can lead to roadblocks and localized clashes between protesters and security forces, particularly in Shia-majority villages around Manama.
