Fired Pentagon general admitted leaking classified Iran and Ukraine information to reporters, Axios says

Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, the Pentagon’s former top military strategist, admitted on video to leaking classified information about Iran and Ukraine to reporters after failing multiple polygraph tests, according to an internal investigation report obtained by Axios.

Axios reported that Sylvia disclosed classified material to two journalists from separate news organizations over roughly a year, beginning as early as June 2025. The contacts allegedly continued through Signal messages and at least one in-person meeting outside the Pentagon.

A U.S. official told Axios that Sylvia acknowledged the misconduct on video after failing four polygraph examinations. Other outlets, citing Pentagon officials, have reported that he failed three polygraphs, leaving the precise number disputed.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth removed Sylvia this week from his post as director of the Joint Staff’s Strategy, Plans and Policy Directorate, known as J5. The Pentagon said an Air Force Office of Special Investigations inquiry led to personnel action to protect sensitive information.

The case has been referred to the Justice Department for possible prosecution.

Sylvia has not publicly responded to Axios’ latest report. The Washington Post reported separately that a colleague said Sylvia denied leaking classified information but acknowledged having contacts with journalists.
