Elon Musk warns Democratic sweep could create ‘permanent one-party state’ in U.S. as he pours millions into GOP midterm effort

Elon Musk warned that a future Democratic sweep of the White House and Congress could turn the United States into what he called a “permanent one-party state,” as he intensifies his financial backing for Republican candidates ahead of the midterm elections.

“My biggest concern is that if there is a clean sweep by Democrats of the House, Senate and Presidency in 2028,” Musk wrote on X, outlining three moves he believes Democrats could pursue.

He said Democrats could grant statehood to Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, legalize immigrants living in the country illegally and expand the Supreme Court to secure a new ideological majority.

“This would result in America becoming a permanent one-party state and the end of democracy in any meaningful sense of the word,” Musk wrote.

The scenarios are Musk’s political predictions, not an announced unified Democratic plan. Democrats have supported statehood for Washington, D.C., while the party has backed allowing Puerto Ricans to determine the island’s political status. Proposals to expand the Supreme Court have support from some Democrats but are not a universally adopted party position.

Musk argued that Republicans must retain at least 51 Senate seats and urged voters to support Republican Senate candidates.

His intervention comes as he has become the largest known donor of the 2026 midterm cycle. The Associated Press reported that Musk contributed more than $276 million to Republican-aligned groups since July, including $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund and $76 million to his America PAC.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized the spending this week, accusing Musk of using his fortune to help Republicans influence the midterm outcome.
