The Trump administration has approved a proposed $2.1 billion sale of 500 Patriot PAC-3 air-defense interceptor missiles to Ukraine, according to the U.S. State Department.

The purchase will be financed by Canada, Germany and Norway through a U.S.-backed funding mechanism, along with Ukrainian financing supported by the European Union. No U.S. government funds are expected to be used for the purchase.

Lockheed Martin will serve as the principal contractor.

The approval comes as Ukraine faces an acute shortage of Patriot interceptors amid intensified Russian missile and drone attacks. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that Kyiv is running critically low on ammunition for the systems, which remain among Ukraine’s most important defenses against ballistic missiles.

The State Department said the proposed sale would strengthen Ukraine’s capacity to defend its population and critical infrastructure and support broader security and stability in Europe.

The approval does not mean all 500 interceptors will be delivered immediately. PAC-3 production remains constrained, and delivery timelines could stretch over an extended period as the United States and its allies work to expand manufacturing capacity.

Lockheed Martin has separately said it aims to significantly increase annual PAC-3 production by 2030 as demand rises across the U.S. military, NATO allies and Ukraine.
