Qatari LNG tanker strikes unidentified objects in Persian Gulf but remains operational with no injuries or environmental damage
A Qatari liquefied natural gas tanker struck unidentified objects while sailing through the Persian Gulf on Friday evening, Qatar’s state news agency reported on Sunday.
The Al Mayeda, operated by Qatar Gas Transport Company, known as Nakilat, encountered the objects while navigating regional waters, prompting an immediate assessment of the vessel and its crew.
Nakilat said no crew members were injured and the incident caused no environmental damage.
The company added that the LNG carrier remained in a safe condition and was fully operational following the incident.
Qatari authorities and the shipping company have not identified the objects involved or publicly explained how the collision occurred.
No indication has been given that the incident was caused by a deliberate attack.
The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of commercial shipping in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz following a series of maritime security incidents during the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
The Strait of Hormuz and surrounding Gulf waters remain critical to global energy markets, carrying a substantial share of the world’s seaborne oil and LNG exports, including shipments from Qatar, one of the world’s largest LNG exporters.
