Trump says he would ‘love to run again’ in 2028 but acknowledges Constitution’s two-term limit leaves little room
President Donald Trump said he would “love to run again” for the White House in 2028 if he had the opportunity, while acknowledging that the language of the U.S. Constitution imposing a two-term presidential limit is highly restrictive.
“Look, I’d love to run again if I had the chance. But the language is very exacting,” Trump said in an interview with New York Post columnist Miranda Devine for her Pod Force One podcast.
Trump pointed to an unspecified recent poll that he said showed him defeating potential contenders by a wide margin.
“They had a poll the other day where I’d beat everybody by so much,” Trump said. “I would love to run, but it’s fine.”
The president then emphasized the time remaining in his second term, saying: “We have more than two years left. That’s a long time. We can do a lot in that period of time.”
Trump also touted his economic record, declaring that the United States has “the greatest economy in history” and predicting that the performance of his second term would surpass that of his first.
The remarks are among Trump’s clearest recent acknowledgments that the constitutional restriction stands in the way of another presidential campaign, despite repeatedly raising the possibility of remaining in office beyond 2028.
The 22nd Amendment states that no person can be elected president more than twice. Trump was elected in 2016 and again in 2024, making his current term his second elected term.
Trump has repeatedly discussed the possibility of another run during his second presidency. As recently as October, he argued that he believed he had a right to run again because of his claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him, an allegation for which no evidence has established widespread fraud capable of changing the result.
His latest comments, however, placed greater emphasis on the constitutional barrier, describing its language as “very exacting” while saying he would otherwise want another campaign.
