Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei discussed regional and international developments in a phone call Monday, with particular emphasis on West Asia, according to Iranian state media.

The two officials underscored the need to continue strategic cooperation between Tehran and Moscow in line with the framework established by the two countries.

Rezaei thanked Putin and other Russian officials for their public positions following the killing of Iran’s former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and for what Tehran described as Moscow’s support for the Iranian people during the conflict.

The call came as Russia continued to urge a diplomatic solution to the confrontation involving Iran, the United States and Israel while maintaining close political coordination with Tehran.

Iran and Russia’s 20-year Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty entered into force in October 2025 after being signed by Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Moscow in January of that year.

The agreement covers political, economic, energy, transport, security and defense cooperation, although it does not contain an automatic mutual-defense clause.
