An aide to Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, confirmed Sunday that he was hospitalized after a stroke. A person told Politico that Murphy’s staff began notifying people about the hospitalization and stroke on Saturday afternoon.

Murphy began experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son’s hockey game yesterday afternoon, his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, said in a statement. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors discovered he had had a stroke, and was then transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring.

Herwitt said Murphy is responding well to treatment, is awake and alert, and that doctors are encouraged by his progress. She said they are optimistic he will make a full recovery.
