Chuck Schumer vows investigations into Trump and pledges to use Congress’s spending powers to end the Iran war
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer has pledged to confront President Donald Trump through congressional investigations, legal challenges and legislative action, while promising to use Congress’s constitutional authority over federal spending to pursue an end to the war against Iran.
In remarks on Wednesday, November 4, following the U.S. midterm elections, Schumer warned that Democrats would challenge the administration whenever it disregarded the law or the wishes of American voters.
“Whenever Trump defies the will of the American people or the law, we will launch investigations, take him to court, and tie him up in legislative knots,” Schumer said.
“The days of Trump’s supplicant Senate are over.”
Schumer identified the Iran war as a priority for congressional action, saying Democrats intended to bring the conflict to an end and had already attracted support from some Republican lawmakers.
“We intend to end the Iran war. Some Republicans have already joined us in ending the war,” he said.
He pointed to Congress’s control over federal spending as a constitutional mechanism for restraining a president who pursues military action without the consent of the American public.
“The Founding Fathers had the power of the purse as one of the ways to stop a president who wages war without the consent of the American people,” Schumer said.
Congress’s authority over federal appropriations gives lawmakers a means of influencing military operations. However, restricting or terminating funding would require legislative action and could face a presidential veto.
Schumer’s remarks signaled an intention to challenge the administration’s conduct of the war through congressional oversight and budget negotiations, potentially bringing the conflict into a broader confrontation between the White House and lawmakers.
The Democratic leader also emphasized domestic economic priorities, promising to pursue measures aimed at reducing household expenses regardless of whether Trump cooperates.
“We are going to work hard to lower costs, with or without the president. Period,” he said.
His statements outlined a political agenda centered on oversight of the presidency, opposition to the continuation of the Iran war and action on the cost of living.
Although Schumer presented Congress’s spending authority as a means of ending the conflict, he did not specify a particular funding proposal or timetable for achieving that objective.
